The Great X-Men Re-read

X-Men: Blinded by the Light

Collects: X-Men #200-204
Writer(s): Mike Carey
Penciller(s): Chris Bachalo, Humberto Ramos, Mike Choi

More Carey goodness, the last volume before the status quo changing Messiah CompleX, which alters the direction of this book somewhat as it changes to X-Men: Legacy.

Quick Synopsis
Core Cast: Cable, Cannonball, Iceman, Lady Mastermind, Mystique, Omega Sentinel, Rogue, Sabretooth

Much shorter in scope than Supernovas, this volume collects the Blinded by the Light story in it's entirety, which performs some much needed character resuscitation on Gambit.

The story is essentially a 3-way throwdown between the X-Men, the Marauders (led by Gambit and Sunfire, picking up from the Blood of Apocalypse arc) and the Acolytes over the McGuffin of Destiny's Diaries, last seen in the original X-Treme X-Men series.

Thankfully the annoying diaries are blown up in the final confrontation between Gambit and Cannonball.

The epilogue drawn by Choi, has Rogue captured by Sinister and his Marauders and gives us some touching (not literally) moments between Gambit and Rogue, with the pieces ready for Messiah Complex, which comes next for this title but is some-way off in the re-read.

Best Bit
So many to choose from..,

  • Mystique's (latest) betrayal of the X-Men and Rogue. "You don't shoot my daughter.... nobody else can do that for me" BANG.
  • Gambit and Sunfire vs Cable at the start of the story, a conflict which takes Cable off screen ready for Messiah CompleX.
  • The resolution of the Mystique and Iceman romance.

Final Words
I find Ramos' art to be hit and miss (hit on Spider-man and Impulse, miss pretty much everywhere else) but he works here. Plus this (I think) was my first exposure to Choi's art which we will be seeing more of on X-Force soon.

A lot of this is moving pieces around ready for Messiah CompleX, but as a story it works too which in the world of X is all you can ask for.

Essential X-Men
9 / 10
